Last Friday evening, my boyfriend and I were in the mood for pizza and decided to hit up Mellow Mushroom for date night. They have several locations in the Orlando area and we went to the location in Winter Park.
This unique pizza restaurant first opened in 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1982, they became a franchise and now have over 25 locations.
And now for the details you’ve been waiting for! Here is a quick review of what we tried at Mellow Mushroom.
Ambiance: Mellow Mushroom is a casual, dine-in restaurant, but you can also pick up a pie to go. The décor is funky with a psychedelic, 1970’s theme. There is an outside patio to dine on, or there are comfy booths inside. They also have a full bar with an array of interesting drinks including ciders and handcrafted cocktails.
Eats: We decided to try the Holy Shiitake Pie at Mellow Mushroom. This delicious pie had an olive oil and garlic base, Shiitake, button and Portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella and MontAmoré cheeses and was drizzled with garlic aioli and black truffle oil. It was garnished with fresh chives and shaved Parmesan. We also had a 1/2 Greek salad.
The tasty: My favorite part of this pizza pie was definitely the shiitake mushrooms and MontAmoré cheese. This cheese had a creamy, almost fruity taste and was definitely unlike anything I’ve tried before on pizza. If you’re a fan of a non-traditional sauce on pizza and love mushrooms, this pie is for you!
The not so tasty: Honestly, there wasn’t anything to complain about during our visit. We didn’t have to wait long for a table, which was surprising on a Friday night, and our server was very attentive.
Cost: under $30 for one medium pizza, 1/2 Greek salad and two soft drinks.
Overall, we really enjoyed Mellow Mushroom and will be back!
